It’s been too long since we’ve heard from New Zealand synthpop songstress Ladyhawke, so when she announced her third album Wild Things was coming June 3, we were pretty excited to have her swing through the Must-Hear Music podcast.
In addition to talking about her new songs “Dangerous” and “A Love Song,” Ladyhawke explains how she scrapped an in-the-works album for one important reason: It was the first thing she had recorded that her mom didn’t like. After that, she cut back on drinking and started focusing seriously on the songs that would become her third album, Wild Things.
After talking Wild Things, Ladyhawke shares her picks for some contemporary and classic song favorites. The new stuff comes courtesy fellow Kiwis Unknown Mortal Orchestra (“Multi-Love” and “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone”), and the vintage picks are from The Go-Go’s (“Our Lips Are Sealed,” “Tonite”) as well as some choice cuts from the tragically departed Prince. Plus, if you’re a bargain hunter like her, she’s got some eBay hacks for you to try out.
To hear my chat with Ladyhawke, skip ahead to the 19:32 mark in the podcast below. Ahead of that, Adelle Platon, Erin Strecker and myself dive into Beyonce’s breathtaking Lemonade and dissect our favorite tracks.
