Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper lead both the Billboard 200 albums chart and the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart in the wake of the Feb. 24 Academy Awards, as their A Star Is Born soundtrack returns to the top of the former tally, while the Oscar-winning Star song “Shallow” vaults to No. 1 on the Hot 100.
On the new episode of the Billboard Pop Shop Podcast (listen below), the Pop Shop team discusses what we, and the industry, can learn from the duo’s chart triumph after the Oscars, and from the success of A Star Is Born in general.
Will we get more movie musicals in the wake of A Star Is Born and the earlier success of The Greatest Showman? How can a viral video (like Gaga and Cooper’s performance of “Shallow” on the Oscars) impact the chart fortunes of a song and album? What can the Oscars learn from the staging of the “Shallow” performance? And perhaps the most obvious lesson learned — following the double No. 1s for Gaga, the Oscar win for “Shallow,” and the critical and commercial success of Star — is that the public has been reminded of Gaga’s talent and stardom.
Plus, the Pop Shop team host an interview with rising pop singer-songwriter Stephen Puth. The artist joins the podcast to chat about his debut single “Sexual Vibe,” how his brother Charlie helped inspire his latest song “Half Gone,” joining the revived Arista Records and more.
