Welcome back to the Coming Around Again podcast, part of the Pop Shop family, where host Andrew Unterberger and a variety of guests will be discussing notable anniversaries being celebrated in the music world.
This week, Coming Around Again welcomes a special guest in Jay Kay, frontman of English jazz-funk greats Jamiroquai. Jay comes on to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards — the year of Fiona Apple declaring “The world is bullshit,” Busta Rhymes and Martha Stewart becoming BFFs, and Jamiroquai winning four awards (including Video of the Year) for their classic “Virtual Insanity” clip.
Kay discusses how the iconic video came together, and his memories from the night of the VMAs — including freaking out when the band’s live “Virtual Insanity” performance got off on a bum note, and riding in a limo with Sheryl Crow after the event. He also evaluates whether the futuristic world of 2017 — evaluated by Kay & Co. on the band’s stellar album from earlier this year, Automaton — is more or less dystopic than the virtually insane future he forecast 20 years ago.
