In the past two years, both Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar curated high-charting albums on the Billboard 200 inspired by films: Queen Bey with her The Lion King: The Gift project and Lamar with the multi-artist Black Panther album. The former just debuted at No. 2 on the chart (dated Aug. 3), while the latter spent three weeks atop the tally in 2018 and went on to earn a Grammy Award nomination for album of the year.
With those releases in mind, what pop stars could follow in their chart footsteps with their own film-inspired curated efforts? On the new Billboard Pop Shop Podcast (listen below), the team discusses some possibilities from some major pop A-listers (are your Cats ears burning, Taylor Swift?).
Perhaps Harry Styles, who is reportedly in talks to co-star in the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid as Prince Eric, could craft a curated project to accompany the aquatic tale (starring Halle Bailey)?
Or what about singer-actress Zendaya pulling together an album inspired by the epic science-fiction remake of Dune, in which she co-stars? Maybe she could pull in one of her co-stars, noted music lover (and Kid Cudi fan) Timothée Chalamet for an assist?
And then there’s a very obvious contender: Could cat superfan Taylor Swift produce a purr-fect album to pair with her upcoming role in the big-screen version of the musical Cats?
And those three names are just the tip of the inspired-by iceberg. The Pop Shoppers also chat about fantasy curated efforts from Lin-Manuel Miranda (for his upcoming In the Heights movie); Lana Del Rey, Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus (for the new Charlie’s Angels film); and more.
In addition, Keith and Katie address the big chart news of the week: how Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” broke the record as the longest-leading No. 1 in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, having notched its 17th week top the tally.
