After nine uninterrupted weeks atop the Billboard 200, Drake’s unstoppable sales titan Views was finally toppled by some 40-year old punks on the heels of an intergalactic public dispute. Blink-182’s California sold 172,000 albums in its first week (231,000 so far) and all of a sudden, the music industry is talking about pop-punk again. Those sales numbers will do that. Are more bands primed to piggy-back their success? Is there a pop-punk revival going on? Has the genre ever gone away in the first place?
Cultural critic/podcast hero Andy Greenwald dove into this angst-ridden world for his 2003 book Nothing Feels Good: Punk Rock, Teenagers and Emo. Then a twenty-something, he tried to make sense of the loaded three-letter genre tag while bands like Dashboard Confessional and Jimmy Eat World were first pushing it to the mainstream. He stopped by Billboard’s Alt In Our Stars podcast to drop some expert knowledge regarding Blink’s big moment and what it means for the current state of pop-punk and emo.
A lot has changed since “The Middle” was a Top 5 single on the Hot 100. Top 40 radio rarely plays pop-rock anymore, and artists like Blink-182 are relegated to rock radio only. But California lead single “Bored to Death” is absolutely killing it on rock radio and with Blink, Panic! at the Disco, 5 Seconds of Summer and others posting big sales weeks, crossover success doesn’t seem that impossible.
