If you watched the first season of HBO’s Westworld and totally understood everything that went on in the dusty confines of the old west-themed amusement park filled with “hosts” ready to grant your every twisted wish, congratulations.
If, however, you’re like the rest of us and have a ton of questions, the news that showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy were prepared to fight the inevitable leak of spoilers for the upcoming second season by revealing the whole plot sounded like a gift from the Delos gods.
During a Reddit AMA on Monday (Apr. 9), the married couple got fans of the dystopian HBO drama salivating when they said they were going to fight the spoilers by just giving away all the secrets to season 2 if they got 1,000 upvotes. Wait, what? That’s what they said, so when the requisite number of votes were tallied a few hours later, they made good with a 25-minute clip entitled “Westworld Season 2 — A Primer.”
The video seemed like the real deal, opening with a shot of beloved programming division boss Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright) narrating a scene in which he wakes up on a beach confused and surrounded by Delos baddies executing hosts, with bodies littering the sand. He’s transported to town, where Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) strolls into frame as fellow pleasure bot Clementine Pennyfeather (Angela Sarafyan) bangs out one of the show’s signature haunting piano codas.
… And it’s Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up,” which Wood sings in mock-earnest fashion for a bit before the video switches over to 22 minutes of a dog staring at a piano, as the show’s score plays in the background. Sorry, everyone — you’ve been epically RickRolled.
