The 81-year-old Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll sits down in the new trailer that was released on Wednesday (March 10) to discuss her past abusive relationship with then-husband and other half of the Ike & Tina Turner duo and how she struggled to make a name for herself.
“I had an abusive life. There’s no other way to tell the story,” the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says in the clip. “The divorce, I got nothing. No money, no house. So I said, ‘I’ll just take my name.'”
She later explains in a voiceover that her dream was to become “the first Black rock ‘n’ roll singer to pack places like the [Rolling] Stones.” And she made it happen: The eight-time Grammy winning-artist’s final 90-show tour, the Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour, is one of the highest grossing tours of all time and was the No. 9 top-grossing tour of 2009, according to Billboard Boxscore.
Tina offers a revealing look at the life and career of the musical icon, from her early success in the ’60s to her resurgence as a global phenomenon with one of the greatest comebacks in music history in the ’80s.
Intimate interviews with Turner herself in her Zurich, Switzerland, hometown, as well as Angela Bassett, Oprah Winfrey, journalist Kurt Loder, playwright Katori Hall and Turner’s husband, Erwin Bach, will be featured in the doc alongside never-before-seen footage, audio tapes and personal photos.
Tina will premiere on March 27 at 8 ET on HBO, and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
