After a guest panelist-less episode last week, The Masked Singer ponied up “Fluffy” comedian Gabriel Iglesias on Wednesday (Feb. 26) night in the seat between mainstays Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger. All five, as per usual, are here to guide us with their oft-inane guesses through the night’s performances. Thanks, gang.
Meanwhile, following last week’s booting of Tony Hawk, two of the remaining five contestants from Group B need to say sayonara. One will go tonight. Who will it be?
First up is Banana, who, after tackling Elvis last week, goes full country this time around with Billy Ray Cyrus’ wedding line-dance fave “Achy Breaky Heart.” It’s perfect schmaltz for this trash extravaganza, and the moon-eyed studio audience eats it up.
Banana’s clues to the panel are cowboy boots, Sons of Anarchy and CHiPs. Ken filters this info through his Jeong brain and comes up with blue collar comedian Larry the Cable Guy. Nicole still thinks Banana is The Office and The Hangover star Ed Helms, while Gabriel guesses Billy Bob Thornton. Righty-o, moving along.
It doesn’t matter what the clues are — OK, they are: the year 1979 and lots and lots of gold (as in Solid Gold, perhaps?) — you won’t dissuade me from thinking Mouse is Dionne Warwick. Just like with Chaka Khan under the Miss Monster mask, there’s no disguising that voice.
Dionne (aka Mouse) lends her pipes to Natalie Cole’s 1975 hit “This Will Be (an Everlasting Love),” and does the late singer justice. Jenny and Ken guess Tracee Ellis Ross and Tina Turner, respectively, the dolts. Robin and Nicole are on the right track, and agree that there’s no mistaking Dionne’s iconic vocal instrument.
Frog gives us a basketball, the letters CSI on a typewriter, a $19 price tag and toy soldiers as his clues, before rapping his way through 50 Cent’s signature cut “In Da Club.” His fancy footwork wows Nicole and Gabriel. But when Jenny guesses that Frog is Alfonso Ribeiro, he offers up the Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air alum’s signature dance move and has everyone screaming until glitter shoots out their ears. Good golly. Next!
It took a few days, but I finally erased the singing Taco from my brain. He’s back in full hard-shelled glory to give the clues that he used to be “a bit of a hot head until I met the most stunning taco of the galaxy.” Sounds spicy. Taco tears into the Elvis Presley chestnut “Bossa Nova Baby,” and the entire panel is at a loss for who this Mexican dish could be.
Jenny throws out Seth McFarland, Gabriel offers up Ted Danson and Ken vomits out Alec Baldwin. Sure, Jans.
Sassy Kitty informs us that sewing is her favorite pastime “when I needle little time alone.” Who’s writing her jokes? Nick Cannon? Another clue she throws out is Modern Family. Then she gives a solid performance of Brett Young’s 2019 country crossover ballad “Mercy.”
Jenny gives her guess of Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, which seems ludicrous until I Google and find out MBB was featured in an episode of Modern Family five years ago. Keeping with the theme of said ABC sitcom, Ken wonders if Kitty is Modern Family star Sarah Hyland.
For the second time this season, a vocal legend is voted off way too soon. It’s curtains for poor Mouse, who, as I and probably thousands of other people guessed, is “Walk on By” songbird and former Solid Gold host, Dionne Warwick.
First Chaka and now this. Anyone who had a heart (ba-zinggg) would never have let these divas go so soon.
