In anticipation of the musical film based on Elton John’s life story, Rocketman’s lead actor Taron Egerton appeared on Monday night’s (March 18) The Late Late Show to preview his “Carpool Karaoke” segment and play a guessing game.
The Welsh actor introduced the “Carpool Karaoke” preview by telling a little anecdote that happened before shooting the segment with co-star Richard Madden. “We went out the night before and got blind-drunk,” he said. “Don’t worry, I sobered up before I drove.”
The seconds-long preview gave a snippet of fun dialogue and a clip of them jamming out to John’s “Bennie and the Jets.” It began with Egerton squeezing into the SUV with a large, feathery pink and blue ensemble that resembled some of John’s most iconic outfits. Madden told him, “I think you should maybe change, mate,” to which an exacerbated Egerton responded with, “Well, Richard I said this the whole time, I said it’s not gonna work.”
He continued, “Why is it that you always get to look cool, smooth and winning, and like a handsome leading man, and I look like a big, multi-colored chicken?”
The episode will be available on Apple TV on Friday, March 22.
Back on the couch with Corden and guest Adam Scott, they played a theme-appropriate Elton John edition of “James That Tune.” Wearing a yellow boa and large sunglasses, Corden played renditions of the English singer-songwriter’s hits — only he kept reminding them that he has “up until this point in my life, never learned to play the piano, and nor do I intend to.”
With animated piano and even guitar tunes, Corden came “in on the chorus,” for various songs which Egerton effectively guessed, such as “Tiny Dancer” and “Crocodile Rock.” He did, however, have some difficulty with John’s Lion King tracks “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and “The Circle of Life.”
