When he and the Bohemian Rhapsody team went onstage to accept the best motion picture, drama award, Malek tried to address Kidman, who presented the prize. Malek was seen on stage trying to talk to Kidman before she turned her back to him. He then put his hand on her back to get her attention, though she still failed to acknowledge Malek.
“I had not seen that,” he said after Kimmel shared the clip. “I’ve known her for many years, despite as it may seem from that video, so I thought I could easily go up and say hi.”
“I have a feeling this is probably haunting me on the Internet,” he said about the video, which has indeed gone viral.
Malek added that while Kidman seemed to brush him off, he did get to talk to her husband, Keith Urban, during the night. “That’s all right. I got love from Keith that night,” he said. “A massive Queen fan.”
Earlier in the segment, the actor spoke about his experience attending the awards ceremony with the actual members of Queen. He said that while the band members seemed to enjoy the night, it was out of their comfort zone.
“It wasn’t necessarily their scene. I think they wanted to enjoy it. It was an exceptional night for everybody,” he said. “They’re used to being rock stars and doing rock star things and that was a very Hollywood industry night. I had a blast. They had a great time, but I think that at first it took some getting used to.”
He added that many of the Golden Globes attendees came up to their table during the ceremony to meet the band. “It was crazy to watch so many big-names fans out that they were there,” he said.
Kimmel later asked if his role as Freddie Mercury in the film has influenced members of the music industry to embrace the actor. “Somehow, some way yes,” he said.
Malek recalled attending a Paul McCartney concert, in which he sat next to Ringo Starr, The Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood and The Who’s Roger Daltrey. Following the performance, Malek was taken backstage “as if I was Freddie Mercury.” He continued, “And then Paul goes, ‘I’m gonna do my best Beatles pose. You do your best Freddie Mercury pose and let’s take a photo.’ And then my fist just went straight up into the air.”
The actor added that Mick Jagger and Madonna are among the musicians to tell him that they are fans of Bohemian Rhapsody.
