Maya Rudolph isn’t afraid to be ridiculous. Like on Wednesday night (May 8), when she visited her pal Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show to play an improv game of “Build a Band” and talk about just absolutely freaking out at #Beychella.
Rudolph and Fallon started things off by slipping into character as their totally made-up band, Cocoa Leather, to sing that indelible Pet Shop Boys-style hit “Tiger Conch,” which, of course, features that indelible refrain “Tiger conch/ Tiger conch/ Somebody stole my tiger conch.” “That’s basically what we did in your office for six years,” Rudolph said of the time they shared together on Saturday Night Live. And if you liked that, just wait until they get up to swivel their hips for “Get Drifter” by totally made-up Latin pop group Salsa Pong.
Rudolph also talked about her band, Princess, performing at this summer’s Bonnaroo. “I’m learning from the kids that that’s a big deal,” she said of her debut at the massive summer gathering in Tennessee. “I’ve never been…I’m not a major festival person.” Sure, she’s performed at comedy festivals over the years, but the only festival festival she’s ever been to is Coachella last year.
“I saw Beychella…I saw it both weekends,” she said, describing watching Beyoncé‘s instantly iconic debut at the California fest with her pals in Haim. “It was the craziest thing… it changed my life,” she said. “We all witnessed something that had never been done, that was made with love, that was made with beauty, that was made with pride. It was a nod to Historical Black Colleges and Universities.”
Rudolph said her daughter was there too and was brought to tears by the spectacle that was recently captured in the Homecoming Netflix doc. She also talked about her new movie Wine Country, which features an all-star cast of SNL vets.
