New best pals Matthew McConaughey and Snoop Dogg ?shared some hilarious on-set anecdotes from their upcoming film, The Beach Bum, on Wednesday night’s (March 27) Jimmy Kimmel Live! — including the time the rapper gave an unsuspecting McConaughey some of his private stash “Snoop weed,” which pretty much wiped out that day’s shoot.
Kimmel opened with what should have been a big, fat softball down the middle: did the duo remember how they met? All he got was blank stares from both men, who then burst into laughter that pretty much said it all. “I mean, it’s magic, Jimmy,” Snoop said of their instant chemistry. “I think certain people in life are meant for each other [and] I think me and Matthew were meant for each other.”
McConaughey then tried to describe the Harmony Korine-directed film, which, he said, follows his “alcoholic, perpetual poet” main character, Moondog, as he tries to write another great American novel — but is just too busy doing drugs and having fun to actually get anything done. The “Gin And Juice” rapper mentioned he had script notes he needed to discuss before signing up to play his role (in which was originally supposed to be him playing himself).
McConaughey told the story of how it came to be: “So finally he got on [a call] with [Korine] … and Snoop said, ‘I had an epiphany last night at 4:30, my character’s not Snoop, my character’s name is Ray, short for…” McConaughey then pointed to Snoop who perfectly chimed in with his character’s full name, “Lingerie.”
The 47-year-old rapper then said he was honored to get a call from Korine, but felt that he needed to add something to the part. “I didn’t want it to feel fake, I wanted it to be believable and I felt like if I was to act other than myself I could bring more to the table,” he explained.
With the perfect timing of a veteran comedy duo, McConaughey then dipped into a hard-to-believe, winding tale of some of the way-out “cats” he’s encountered throughout his life who he based his Moondog character on, including the elusive “Captain Steve,” a Florida smuggler who essentially dragged his now-longtime-wife out to sea in order to convince her to marry. Oh, and did he mention another pal, who tripped on acid for the first time at 40 and “all of the tentacles in [his] brain just came together?”
Kimmel wondered if Snoop knows anyone like that, to which he smiled widely and said, “I got a couple of homies like this.”
The two then described The Beach Bum set as one long “wrap party.” Snoop, though, wasn’t down with the oregano-filled “fake blunts and fake joints” that were laid out for McConaughey, who was launched into outer space when Snoop secretly swapped in one from his personal stash.
“Snoop goes, ‘Yo, Moondog, that wasn’t prop weed, that was Snoop weed,’” McConaughey said. “It was the first take of the night, I didn’t say another word of English, really. You said I rapped a lot.”
“You rapped for 13 hours straight” Snoop smiled. The Beach Bum, which also features Isla Fisher, Zac Efron, Jonah Hill and Jimmy Buffett, opens on Friday (March 29).
