Lauren Daigle took to The Ellen Show stage to sing “Still Rolling Stones” off her album Look Up Child on Wednesday (Oct. 24).
Daigle, sporting red hair and lipstick as vibrant as her vocals, charges into a strong first verse. “Out of the shadows/ Bound for the gallows/ A dead man walking/ ’Til love came calling/ Rise up/ Rise up,” she sings, a gospel trio backing her soulful voice.
“All at once I came alive/ This beating heart, these open eyes/ The grave let go/ The darkness should have known/ You’re still rolling stones/ You’re still rolling stones,” she continues, gesturing with bracelet-covered arms. The hard-hitting piano chords drive the song into the bridge, a quiet moment in which Daigle reflects on the forgiveness and grace of her Christian faith.
“She was on the tiny season that I was on American Idol, and look at her now — because of me,” host Ellen DeGeneres joked at the performance’s conclusion.
The 27-year-old singer originally made a name for herself under the contemporary Christian music banner, but recently crossed over to mainstream audiences, having been compared to female powerhouses including Adele and Amy Winehouse.
