These are troubling times. And when things get dark, you can always count on Kristen Wiig to make you laugh away the sorrow in the most ridiculous way. The Downsizing star dropped by The Late Late Show on Wednesday night (Dec. 6) to shine her beacon of silly, despite host James Corden’s best efforts to spread a joyful, heartfelt holiday message.
“Anyone paying attention to the news these days knows that we’re in turbulent times,” Corden told the audience. “Our country has never been more divided and as a result it’s hurting,” added Wiig somberly. So, to break the spell of darkness, the pair decided to brighten things up by singing a duet of Leonard Cohen‘s iconic “Hallelujah.”
“It’s one of the most beautiful, peaceful and powerful songs ever written,” said Corden. “And maybe, just maybe with this song we can start to heal our nation,” Wiig said. Things started off great, as the band played the tune’s signature heart-swelling arrangement… that is until Wiig got to the chorus. Turns out Kristen has no idea how to pronounce the word “Hallelujah.”
For the record, it’s not hard J, nor “holly how ya,” “holler back girl” or “Halle Berry.”
