JoJo Siwa has made Dancing With the Stars history. During the premiere of the show’s 30th season on Monday (Sept. 20), the popular children’s entertainer danced with pro dance partner Jenna Johnson to a cover of Jet‘s signature 2004 hit, “Are You Gonna Be My Girl?” to rave reviews from the judges.
Siwa and Johnson took to the DWTS stage in bedazzled, neon colored bustiers and purple pleated pants for their quickstep number, which saw the women bursting with energy across the dance floor. They ended their performance in two different poses, before glittering confetti fell from the ballroom’s ceiling. The judges — Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough — gave the pair a score of 29 out of 40, the highest score of the night.
After the performance, Siwa shared her excitement about the big moment on social media. “That was THE BEST ever!!!!” she gushed on Instagram alongside a photo of herself performing with Johnson, making sure to thank the pro. “Making history and Top score of the night was literally a dream come true for me. Chase every dream you have and believe in yourself.”
The J Team star previously expressed her excitement at being able to dance with a woman on Dancing With the Stars this season. “I’m excited that I get to do it,” Siwa said during a virtual panel for the show during Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour in August. “I think it’s cool. I think it breaks a wall that’s never been broken down before. And it’s normal for a girl to dance with a guy, and I think that that’s really cool, but I think that it’s really special that not only now, do I get to share with the world you get to love who you want to love, but also, you get to dance with who you want to dance with.”
Siwa, 18, came out publicly earlier in the year in a tweet. A few months later, the former Dance Moms star opened up to People about how she identifies. “I still don’t know what I am. It’s, like, I want to figure it out … I don’t know — bisexual, pansexual, queer, lesbian, gay, straight. I always just say ‘gay’ because it just kind of covers it, or ‘queer’ because I think the keyword is cool,” she said. “Technically, I would say that I am pansexual because that’s how I have always been my whole life is just like, my human is my human.”
