Legend, fresh off his Emmy win for his role in NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live, has joined The Voice as a coach for its upcoming 16th season in the spring. Legend will join the spring panel that includes returning coaches Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. Jennifer Hudson, who coached the 13th and upcoming 15th season of the NBC singing competition, is not returning. Carson Daly will again return as host.
Legend, sources say, came to NBC with a desire to join The Voice. In addition to his Emmy for Jesus Christ Superstar Live, Legend is a new member of the rare EGOT club, having won 10 Grammys, an Oscar (for original song, “Glory,” from Selma) and a Tony (for co-producing Jitney).
“I’m thrilled to join the coaches of The Voice. I’ve been a guest and mentor on the show multiple times and I’m so excited to discover talented singers and help them make the most of their gift. I hope the world is ready for #TeamJL,” Legend said.
Clarkson has been a coach on The Voice since season 14. She first appeared on The Voice in season two as a part-time adviser, returning in season 13 in the same role. Levine and Shelton have been coaches since The Voice premiered in 2011.
“John Legend is a one-of-a-kind musician and producer with remarkable skills that are beyond measure,” said Paul Telegdy, president of the alternative and reality group at NBC. “His multi-dimensional career and incredible talents provide a repertoire that will excite and inspire our artists. This coaching panel is sure to ignite season 16.”
Legend is repped by WME and Del Shaw.
