Tyler Perry stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday night (March 19) to talk about learning how to swim, which exotic vacation home he flies to when working on a new movie script and how he went up against one of his fiercest rivals to date in a recent bidding war at an art auction.
“I was really, really excited to be there and there was this art that came out for auction,” Perry told Kimmel about an item he was intent on winning at Saturday night’s (March 17) Wearable Art Gala fundraiser in Los Angeles for the WACO Theater Center. “It’s this beautiful painting of Sidney Poitier and I’m like, ‘I’ve got to have that.'” So, Perry said he put up his paddle to bid and someone on the aisle next to him counter-bid on the acrylic painting.
As you may have heard by now, the other bidder was none other than JAY-Z and Beyoncé‘s daughter, 6 year-old Blue Ivy. “I said, ‘Oh, I’m gonna teach you a lesson today!,'” Perry laughed recalling his thought process in going hard against the first grader. “And she keeps going up and up and up with it.”
The bidding got up to $19,000, which Kimmel joked was three months allowance for the pop princess. Perry, promoting his new film, Acrimony, said had Blue Ivy gone one more he was going to let her have it. “But for me I’m thinking it’s charity, it’s a good cause and I’m not letting this kid take this painting from me. I’m gonna teach you now little girl! You’re not gonna get everything you want!” Perry ultimately won the bidding at $20,000 after Jigga comically took away Blue’s paddle.
