There is only one Elsa. Except if you ask James Corden. Because on Wednesday night’s (Nov. 20) Late Late Show, the sometimes pushy host insisted that he should take on the leading role in the Crosswalk: The Musical take on Frozen 2.
As you might expect, that didn’t really go very well. Surrounded by the actual cast of the sequel to the animaed splash — Kristen Bell (Anna), Idina Menzel (Elsa), Josh Gad (Olaf) and Jonathan Groff (Kristoff) — Corden made the inexplicable choice to give himself Menzel’s role.
Bell kicked things off with a delightful “Do You Want to Build a Snowman,” sung from behind a door, as Corden hung out on the other side in an ill-fitting blonde wig and purple cape. But the actress just couldn’t hold her tongue about his performance. “I really kind of thing that Idina should play Elsa,” she told Corden, with the rest of the cast agreeing with her suggestion.
A sing-off ensued, and, spoiler alert, Menzel blew a pouty Corden’s wig right off his head and into a giant snowflake costume. Which he did not love.
Things brightened up for the second number, “For the First Time in Forever,” and though Corden was sidelined for the Frozen 2 song “Some Things Never Change,” he found a way to shoehorn himself into the epic “Let it Go” finale. Frozen 2 opens on Friday (Nov. 22).
