Love him or hate him, you have to admit that Jack Black is quite the character. Making one hell of an entrance with magic cards, Dragon Ball Z-inspired moves, an attempt on the floss dance and a quick robot dance, the legendary comedian served up a very memorable appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show Thursday (Sept. 20).
“We’ve got to cut to commercials now. So much cardio in that entrance!” Black said of his quick performance after throwing himself on Fallon’s couch.
The past year has been for Black, busy following his appearance on the billion-worth 2017 blockbuster Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. “I’ve done some big movies, but that was insane,” he shared of the experience. “I think you deserve an Oscar for that!” Fallon gushed. Adding another family fantasy-comedy to his belt, Black is also starring alongside Cate Blanchett in Eli Roth’s new movie The House with a Clock in Its Walls, out Friday (Sept. 21).
Throwing it back to his musical project with longtime pal Kyle Gass, Black also shared exciting news about Tenacious D: “We have a new album coming out called Post-Apocalypto. It’s actually a movie that we made and the album is the soundtrack for that.” As Black and Fallon went on an impromptu stretching session, the comedian added, “We put out a record every six years and it’s time for us to butterfly again.”
Fallon, who is a Tenacious D fan, reminded Black of his notorious live performances with the infamous Sax-A-Boom: a saxophone-shaped toy that plays pre-recorded licks accompanied by a variety of backing tracks. “It’s like a saxophone but it is a different kind of instrument. They look similar but it takes years to master!” Black deadpanned.
Fallon then pulled out Sax-A-Boom from under his desk and asked Black to show off his well-known skills. Black gladly took over the stage accompanied by The Roots, nailing another comical performance.
