Empire fans can rejoice, because a new musical drama from Lee Daniels is coming to your TV screens. Following Billboard‘s advanced screening of the pilot — and an incredible ASCAP artist showcase at the Helen Mills Event Space — FOX’s new show Star is poised to follow in the Lyons’ footsteps and become a certified success.
From the Academy Award-nominated creator Daniels (Empire, Precious), Star follows the lives of three girls trying to make it as a modern girl group. Featuring well-known names like Queen Latifah, Benjamin Bratt and Lenny Kravitz, among others, the show also welcomes promising newcomers Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny and Brittany O’Grady, as the members of the main trio.
Star Davis (Demorest) — a 17-year-old who, like her younger sister Simone (O’Grady), has spent her life in and out of foster care and dreams of becoming a star — links up on Instagram with Alexandra Crane (Destiny), the wealthy daughter of famous singer Roland Crane (Kravitz). Disenchanted with her privileged life and critical father, Alexandra wants to leave it behind to start her own girl group and make music she is proud of. Together, the three girls head to Atlanta to stay with the sisters’ godmother Carlotta Brown (Queen Latifah), and attempt to break into the cutthroat music scene.
Though it’s a musical drama based on common rags-to-riches motifs, it never feels old or tired, mostly thanks to the writers and actors. Despite the darker scenarios that play out — providing a powerful, underlying commentary on matters like abuse and race. The hilarious, quick-witted jabs between the characters are delivered effortlessly.
Based on Billboard‘s first look, Star triumphs rather than falling flat. Queen Latifah and her powerhouse vocals shine whenever she sings, and the girls’ song “I Can Be” could easily be the new squad anthem of modern times.
With a stacked cast, incredible music and dramatic humor, Star is a triple-threat you don’t want to miss. Watch the trailer below and catch the special premiere of Star tonight (Dec. 14) at 9 p.m. on FOX.
