It was a long time coming, but Emily Blunt finally made things right with Chris Martin. Just weeks after the Coldplay singer revealed to Ellen DeGeneres that he was a bit hurt that Blunt and husband John Krasinski had blown off his idea for a musical version of their hit horror series A Quiet Place, Blunt made it up to Martin in the best way possible on Monday’s (Jan. 27) Ellen.
“I basically felt that I’d left [Martin’s message] too late, at which point British people have a tendency … when there’s an issue, we sort of sweep it under the carpet and pretend it never existed,” she told the show’s host before busting into a musical mea culpa that found her singing a cover of Coldplay’s “In My Time” with some new, special lyrics. “I just kind of erased Chris Martin from my life in that moment, and I now deeply regret it.”
She said the song was her way of asking for forgiveness as she let Martin know that she truly loves him. “And this is a massive sacrifice because I literally loathe singing singing for people,” Blunt said while grabbing a mic and joining a pianist sitting at a rose and candle-laden piano. “Quiet place, quiet place/ No response felt so in your face,” Blunt sang while taking a seat on a stool.
“You felt lost, oh yeah/ It seemed so low, kind of low, to leave you out there/ On your own in your quiet place,” she continued as Ellen posted an image of Martin describing his musical idea to her on the show in a bubble next to Blunt. “Chris, how long did you wait for us?/ Chris, my husband threw me under the bus/ Chris, your musical was a bust.”
It was bad, she crooned, begging Martin not to abandon the couple, but mostly because she wants to keep getting free tickets to his shows. Previously, Martin had told DeGeneres that when the original Quiet Place came out he had a funny idea for a sequel, which he mimed by pretending to silently play piano. He sent the jokey premise to the power couple, but said they never responded, which made him worry that maybe they thought he was trolling them.
Ellen promised Martin the pair would respond, and Krasinski did a few days later, writing a comment on her Instagram post about the snafu: “I… did not get an email from Chris Martin. The man is a world treasure. Are you kidding me!?!?! Emily What have you done!?!?”
Though Martin’s idea was a no-go, A Quiet Place: Part II opens on March 20.
