She went there! During the Sonny With a Chance/So Random! reunion on Zoom Saturday (April 25), Demi Lovato made light of her trips to get treatment while virtually hanging with the cast of the Disney Channel shows.
As the chat kicked off, Allisyn Snyder asked her fellow castmates — which included Tiffany Thornton, Matthew Scott Montgomery, Doug Brochu, Sterling Knight and others — what they’d been up to since the show ended. The “I Love Me” singer didn’t hesitate with her response. “Rehab! Several times!” she cracked, sending her friends into fits of laughter.
“It’s not just rehab!” reminded So Random’s Montgomery. “You also performed at the Grammys!”
Later, the star told castmate Thornton about how she was an inspiration. “When I went away to treatment for the first time, I remember it like, you were my biggest inspiration coming out of it,” Lovato shared. “You dealt with all of those pressures of being a woman on TV. I looked at that like, ‘I wish I had that, so bad.'”
“Yes, I probably was happier in my head with whatever I looked like at the time, but I’m so much happier now with the mentality you have,” she confessed. “I look back and I’m like, ‘Man, it’s a shame we wasted any energy on what we wore on set. … Now I’m just like, ‘It doesn’t matter! What I’m wearing doesn’t matter!'”
When the subject of how Lovato used to nap between scenes came up, she explained to her friends that it was simply because she was worn out and unhappy. “I wasn’t sleeping. I was miserable and angry too because I felt like I was being overworked, which I was!” she said.
Lovato also took a lighter tone when discussing her health issues. After Thornton joked about how the star — who played title character Sonny Munroe — always had her dressing room temperature set to “98 degrees,” Lovato responded with a laugh, “You guys! I had an eating disorder and was underweight and freezing!”
The singer-actress also shared how happy she was that Sonny continued after her season two exit in 2011, when the Disney program spun off to become So Random! “You guys carried on without me! The show didn’t stop with me!” she noted. “You guys continued to do it and you killed it. It was awesome. I’m so glad that So Random! existed, because then I got to know Matthew, who’s become one of my closest friends.”
Lovato later opened up about how she’s questioned continuing with her career in entertainment, and considering a more low-key life. “I had moments all the time where I was like, ‘Do I want to continue this, or do I want to pull a Tiffany and move to Texas and have a family and have a farm?'” she revealed. “I am having a farm with animals!”
Before the singer signed off, Thornton asked what advise she’d give to other young performers. “Always speak up for your needs, said Lovato. “Just speak up for yourself!”
Lovato sought treatment at the end of 2010. Afterward, she told fans: “I was dealing with issues that I know not only girl just my age, but of all ages are dealing with.” More recently, she sought treatment again in 2018. The performer has been open with fans about her struggles with eating disorders, drugs and alcohol. She was sober for six years before her 2018 relapse, which she revealed in her song “Sober.”
