On the eve of Carrie Underwood‘s Cry Pretty album release, the country superstar stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to chat about the inspirations for her new album and deliver the live debut of “Love Wins.” But what those in attendance didn’t see on the Sept. 13 episode — which was filmed in New York City’s Central Park — was Underwood’s post-show duet with Mr. Fallon.
The two channeled their inner Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers for a rendition of “Islands in the Stream” as part of a little “Carrie-oke” after the official show wrapped. Luckily for the fans who weren’t part of the Central Park crowd, the cameras hadn’t actually stopped rolling, and The Tonight Show unveiled the special performance on their YouTube page on Sunday.
“So. Much. Fun!!!” Underwood tweeted along with the video. She and Fallon harmonized almost perfectly, and the “Cry Pretty” singer even added her own Carrie flair with some major power notes, making for a performance that was just as fun for the audience as it was for them.
“Islands in the Stream” followed a short-lived cover of Post Malone’s “Psycho,” which Carrie actually did pretty well rapping until the teleprompter failed to keep up with the speed of the song. “I’m sorry, Post Malone, I’m sorry. I’m a big fan,” she said with a smile.
Underwood’s Cry Pretty just debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, making her the first female country artist in history to have four albums reach the top spot on the all-genre chart. She’ll return to New York City on the Cry Pretty 360 Tour next October — here’s hoping for another Fallon/Underwood duet one year later.
