Drag Race season nine and All Stars 4 competitor Valentina has proudly come out as nonbinary. In a recent interview with Out magazine, Valentina discussed her gender identity, as well as how it has impacted her upcoming role as Angel Dumott Schunard in Fox’s Rent: Live.
“I identify as nonbinary,” Valentina told Out. “I don’t completely feel like a man, I don’t completely feel like a woman. I feel like a goddess. I feel like I’m my own gender.”
Valentina joins the ranks of a handful of other Drag Race contestants who identify as nonbinary or gender nonconforming. Examples of such competitors include Jinkx Monsoon and Aja who both identify as nonbinary, and Courtney Act who identifies as genderqueer.
Valentina is also looking forward to seeing how her personal journey with her gender identity will translate into her role as Angel — a character whose gender has been debated for years. “I get to bring that aspect to my Angel character and really have an idea of like, ‘Why is she so happy and so confident in her armor, in her drag?’” she said.
Valentina is also excited to bring more nonbinary representation to television screens across the country when Rent: Live airs on Jan. 27. “I do take the responsibility of being a gay nonbinary drag queen person taking on a really important iconic role like Angel and I hope [audiences] tune in for it,” she said.
