President Donald Trump’s administration is considering a policy that would eliminate transgender recognition by requiring individuals to be defined as male or female based on their genitalia at birth, according to a government memo obtained by the New York Times. The report has caused an uproar on social media Sunday (Oct. 21).
The Department of Health and Human Services is aiming to establish a uniform definition of gender, determined “on a biological basis that is clear, grounded in science, objective and administrable,” the report says. “Sex means a person’s status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth. The sex listed on a person’s birth certificate, as originally issued, shall constitute definitive proof of a person’s sex unless rebutted by reliable genetic evidence.”
Celebrities, including musicians, actors and reality TV stars, reacted to the proposed move of defining gender as an unchangeable condition, one that would drastically roll back civil rights and protections for the transgender community, which includes an estimated 1.4 million Americans.
“I woke to this. I’m honestly terrified,” RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Peppermint said on Twitter in response to the report.
Drag Race co-star Shea Couleé wrote: “Dear Trump: You don’t tell women what to do with their bodies. You don’t get to define gender. You don’t have the qualifications to do so. You don’t have a spine. You don’t have a clue. We won’t take this lying down. November is coming. Look how orange you fucking look girl.”
“THIS IS ‘HIS CODE’ 4…MAKE THEM DISAPPEAR,” wrote Cher, whose son, Chaz Bono, is transgender. He tweeted, “I can’t begin to express the rage I feel toward an administration that is trying to redefine me out of existence.”
“gender is a man-made construct and trans people are human beings deserving of all the rights and privileges of humanity,” Neon Trees‘ Tyler Glenn said. “I’m sick to my stomach for all of my trans friends, fans and family. I SEE YOU. WE SEE YOU. I rebuke the Trump Administration.”
“We must not give up the fight,” said actress Laverne Cox. “But in the face of this affront on my existence and the existence of my community I choose love not fear. We exist and always have.”
See their reactions, and many more, from social media below. (The Trevor Project, a suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ youth, has also released a statement in response to the news, saying: “When a young person hears that their existence and gender identity will not be recognized by their government, they hear that they are not worthy to be a part of that nation. Transgender youth seeing this report should know that they are not alone and that their identity is valid — nothing the government does can change that … The administration’s choice to deny the reality of transgender lives is reckless and dangerous.”)
I woke to this. I’m honestly terrified. Basically TRUMP asked every gov agency define sex as only man or woman NOT Changable. only birth sex will be valid. disputes to be settled by genetic tests. He’s already put people in charge who will approve this.https://t.co/pMDm3hzD1Z

I can’t begin to express the rage I feel toward an administration that is trying to redefine me out of existence. Just another gift for his small minded base, terrified of the diversity that has always made America exceptional! #Vote https://t.co/OrAPEnaK9r

-Gender variant humans should sustain the right of self determination. Precolonial tribes of people all recognized the validity of varying gender identities and occupation. Gender variance has been a cultural construct for centuries before colonial rule-
