Last night, Trixie Mattel snatched the crown in an epic showdown of a finale for RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 3 — and she’s already making her first moves as a winner. The Wisconsin-born queen has released the folksy One Stone, out today (March 16), to follow-up last year’s Two Birds.
“I’m gay, we like themes,” Mattel told Billboard of her album titles.
Trixie’s debut album, Two Birds, debuted at No. 16 on the Americana/Folk Albums chart. It also hit No. 68 on the Top Album Sales chart. With her increased exposure, the folk-singing drag queen is expected to outperform with her sophomore release.
“As the only drag queen folk musician, that might make me the best drag queen folk musician,” Mattel said. “But Dolly Parton might count as a drag queen.“
In the spirit of Mattel’s folksy new album, the newly crowned Drag Race hall of famer curated a playlist exclusively for Billboard. Check it out on Spotify below.
Aimee Mann, “Charmer”
Dolly Parton, “Don’t Think Twice”
Gordon Lightfoot, “Sundown”
Brandi Carlile, “The Eye”
“Brandi Carlile is such a fucking legend. You know, the two men who back her up are twins, so when they sing in their three part harmonies, it’s like magic. It’s like she’s got two identical voices backing her up. It’s amazing.”
First Aid Kit, “It’s A Shame”
Trixie Mattel, “Moving Parts”
John Prine, “In Spite of Ourselves”
Kacey Musgraves, “Follow Your Arrow”
“I love people like Kacey Musgraves. She is super, super progressive considering she’s a country music star and has lines in her songs about smoking weed or maybe kissing a girl once in a while. You know?”
Changes, “Langhorne Slim and The Law”
Emmylou Harris, “Boulder to Birmingham”
Melissa Etheridge, “I Will Never Be The Same”
“My aunt was a lesbian and she was obsessed with Melissa Etheridge. She plays guitar too. I learned a lot of Melissa Etheridge songs. My dream is to quit drag, and literally tour doing Melissa Etheridge b-sides.”
Trixie Mattel, “Little Sister”
Leigh Nash, “Chicago”
Jackson Browne, “Take It Easy” (Solo Acoustic)
Jason Isbell, “Speed Trap Town”
“Jason Isbell, I think is probably one of the best songwriters of our time. I mean, he’s finally getting the recognition that he deserves. He wins Grammys and stuff now, but he was like a hidden gem, and it’s fun to watch people discover him cause he’s so good.”
Jim Croce, “Operator”
Trixie Mattel, “Seen My Man”
June Carter Cash, “I Used To Be Somebody”
Anita Carter, “Love’s Ring of Fire”
Katy Perry, “The One That Got Away” (Acoustic)
“I’ve been listening to the Katy Perry live album. I know she’s kind of like, gimmicky, but I love her singing in these songs with her guitar. She’s pretty gifted.”
Kenny Rogers, “The Gambler”
Michelle Branch, “Goodbye to You” (Unplugged)
KT Tunstall, “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” (iTunes Live from SOHO)
Margo Price, “Hands of Time”
