“This is an emergency,” singer/actor Tituss Burgess declares in a sultry voice at the outset of his brand new single. “Put down your phone, 911 will be of no use. It’s a matter of the utmost importance — listen close while I talk to you.”
The emergency, it turns out, is that the world is in need of some fun, and Burgess is here to provide it. Thus, he made “Dance M.F.,” the star’s hilarious and catchy new single, accompanied by an even funnier animated music video (premiering exclusively below).
Throughout the song, Burgess addresses the listener, explaining that he knows they’re “dazed” or “depressed” with the current situation we’ve found ourselves in. But it’s time to stop moping, get up off of your couch and “dance motherf—er,” as featured guest Imani Coppola sings. “Live your best life/ This is your day/ Go off tonight/ Dance it away!”
In the video for the track, an animated version of the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star confronts a series of increasingly sad individuals, inspiring them to stop worrying about what’s happening in the world outside and to focus on the here and now. And he succeeds, as each of the avatars gets up and starts dancing like no one’s watching.
Speaking to Billboard ahead of the song’s release, Burgess said that while the song is applicable for our current situation (allthough it was written before “the world stopped,” as he puts it), he filled it with a central message that is useful at all times.
“I wanted to create something where it would encourage people who may be dance challenged, like moi, to just get up and move,” he says. “Stop being in your head about everything, and to stop taking into stock what everyone else is thinking. Just do you.”
