During her stint on season 10 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Vixen became one of the most polarizing queens in the show’s history, with some fans claiming she was just petty and mean, and others applauding her for speaking out on the show about important issues like racism in the fanbase and in real life. Now, the queen is taking an opportunity to give fans context.
On Monday (March 18), The Vixen released her heated hip-hop track “Chicago,” detailing her upbringing in the city and how it informed her life. The track also features a number of iconic quotes from Drag Race, referencing how the star was perceived on national television. “Everywhere that I go/ Police want to follow/ The truth is hard to swallow/ Bitch, I’m from Chicago,” she spits on the track’s chorus.
In one particularly interesting twist, the song’s third verse switches up both the beat and melody to make a clear reference to The Notorious B.I.G.’s song “Just Playing (Dreams),” where The Vixen aims to pay homage to one of her heroes.
In a statement to Billboard, The Vixen said she wanted to keep the song somewhat secret in order to adequately express herself, but she found it hard when her public life became part of the song’s focus. “This song was really hard to keep under wraps because it expresses who I am underneath the makeup,” she said. “Half of it I wrote on a rooftop of my condo in Chicago and the last part came to me in the studio after seeing some black influencers on Twitter talking trash about me. I got heated, I took a 20 minute break and came back with more bars.”
