Singer-songwriter extraordinaire Teddy Geiger — who is now releasing music as Teddy<3 — took to Apple Music’s Beats 1 with Zane Lowe to premiere “Body & Soul,” the latest track off her third album, LillyAnna. The track follows “I Was in A Cult,” which premiered last month.
During her time on Beats 1 Radio, Geiger confessed to the challenges of pop stardom early on in her career, the online origins behind LillyAnna, and the “clouded” feeling that came with not fully being able to express her identity.
The Shawn Mendes collaborator addressed the “odd” feeling that came with being commodified during her start in the record industry as an emerging pop star. “I feel like that whole first record [2006’s Underage Thinking] for me was cool to be the artist and see what that’s like, and experience that,” she said. “Like, see how the artist works with the label and songwriters, producers and make all of that. Now I think that helps me, it was almost like my college experience, was going through that.”
Geiger also opened up about exploring her gender identity through LillyAnna, a secret online alter ego she created before transitioning. LillyAnna, says Geiger, arrived in 2011 or 2012, a period of time when she was dealing with a considerable amount of uncertainty about her identity. She added that the period of time before transitioning left her mental state “clouded.”
“All of these songs and everything are kind of from before. They’re all from maybe like 2011, 2012 until right before I transitioned is when I wrote all of this. There are a lot of songs about like struggling with identity and not knowing how to really let out and express yourself. It’s kind of all clouded.”
Geiger revived her LillyAnna alter ago to allow her to complete the songs that she left unfinished.
“Some of that having that perspective and being able to look back, and also, then having the clarity to be able to just complete things was huge,” she said.
