As COVID-19 continues to spread through the world, nightlife has been deeply affected, especially in the LGBTQ community. So a group of LGBTQ stars and allies are teaming up to give back.
On Monday (April 20), RuPaul’s Drag Race production company World of Wonder and The Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative announced Stonewall Gives Back! A Live-Streaming Concert For the LGBTQ+ Nightlife Community. Taking place on Thursday, April 23, on the WOWPresents YouTube channel, the event will raise money for a fund where LGBTQ nightlife industry professionals can apply for emergency assistance as stay-at-home orders continue around the world.
The event will be hosted by Drag Race judge Michelle Visage and YouTube personality Tyler Oakley, with performances and appearances from superstars including Cyndi Lauper, Troye Sivan, Alan Cumming, Allie X, Betty Who, Carlie Hanson, Darren Hayes, Dave Mizzoni, Greyson Chance, Issac Dunbar, John Cameron Mitchell, Kim Petras, Kristin Chenoweth, Leland, Lorna Luft, Matt Rogers, MUNA, Nina West, Our Lady J, Pabllo Vittar, Peppermint, Rufus Wainwright, Shoshana Bean, Todrick Hall, Tucker and Vincint.
Erich Bergen, the producer behind The Rosie O’Donnel Show’s recent coronavirus fundraising event, will be taking the helm as the lead producer for the streaming event. In a statement, Bergen said that he wants to create a space where people can come together through music. “I think this pandemic has made it even more clear just how vulnerable some of our communities actually are,” he said. “We are coming together to respond to this crisis in a collaborative way, through music, which is the great unifier.”
Brett McLaughlin, better known as singer-songwriter Leland, added that supporting the LGBTQ nightlife scene meant supporting the future of queer art. “So many careers are built and sustained by the support of the LGBT nightlife community,” he explained. “It’s our turn and duty to support them during this time of need. I’m so grateful that many of my friends jumped at the chance to give back when asked. This is going to be an incredibly special evening.”
