Trying to go about your day while constantly being haunted by the ghost of an older Elizabeth Taylor is a hard problem to deal with, but Cody Critcheloe (aka SSION) is trying to handle it in the new video for his song “At Least the Sky is Blue.”
The video for Critcheloe’s second single features lo-fi pop artist Ariel Pink playing Ms. Taylor, constantly appearing as Critcheloe attempts to live his daily life. The video culminates in Critcheloe appearing on stage as Liza Minelli, performing with Taylor in a duet of the song.
Critcheloe said in a statement that the song and video are an homage to the bizzare queer films the artist grew up watching. “I wanted to make a narrative music video that felt akin to the cult gay movies I grew up worshipping but with a modern twist and modern accessories,” he said. “Something romantic and tragic, but still winking and smirking along the way.”
“At Least the Sky is Blue” is Critcheloe’s second single from his upcoming album O — the artist’s first project under the SSION moniker in seven years. Watch the video for “At Least the Sy is Blue” below.
