French singer-songwriter Soko has a history of making splashy, visually arresting music videos to accompany her lo-fi indie pop music. But with her latest release, the star is taking a more personal approach.
On Wednesday (Oct. 7), Soko released a new music video for “Let Me Adore You,” her intimate ode to queer love off of her third studio album Feel Feelings. The visual, taken from years’ worth of video footage from her home in Los Angeles, shows Soko in her element not as a performer, but as a partner and a mother.
Throughout the video, Soko shows clips filmed by photographer Jasper Rischen of herself from when she was pregnant with her son, Indigo Blue, all the way up to more recent clips of her and her partner Stella Honorel raising him, put together as a celebration of queer families in 2020.
In a statement released with the single, Soko revealed that she didn’t initially intend these clips to be assembled as a video, but decided to do just that as a message of acceptance and inclusivity. “Our photographer and filmmaker friend, Jasper Rischen, has been documenting our family adventures over a few years, he’s captured so many magical moments that I want to remember forever,” she wrote. “So we decided to put these images over my most intimate song. Rainbow families need more representation, so this is our attempt at reminding people that this exists – a very happy gay family!”
