Sia turned Donald Trump down when he asked for an on-set selfie at Saturday Night Live in solidarity with her “queer and Mexican fans.” The “Cheap Thrills” hitmaker divulged the stomach-churning run-in with the real-estate-mogul-turned-president in a recent Rolling Stone feature.
According to Sia, while she was backstage at the Nov. 7, 2015, SNL episode, Donald and daughter Ivanka approached Sia with camera in tow. They asked the pop star for a quick snap, a request that Sia said she was hesitant to fulfill, concerned about how a pic with the two would be received by her fans.
“Actually, do you mind if we don’t? I have a lot of queer and Mexican fans, and I don’t want them to think that I support your views,” she said she told the then-presidential candidate. Sia recalled Trump not taking the rejection personally. “It was as if he viewed me as protecting my brand,” she added. “He respected that.”
And, in a peculiar turn of events, the exchange may have induced a visceral reaction in the pop singer. “I was like, ‘Thank you so much,’ ” she said, “and then I went into my dressing room and had crazy diarrhea.”
The full-length debut from LSD, Sia’s collaboration with English artist Labrinth and producer-to-the-stars Diplo is due out this September. Three singles have already been issued ahead of the album, the latest of which, “Thunderclouds,” came out earlier this month.
