For Shea Couleé, the desire to be a musician came long before they were immersed in the world of drag. “Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember,” the drag superstar told Billboard. “I started singing in the church choir at the age of 7 and my grandpa had been the director of the youth choir for years. So music is in my blood, I guess.”
After releasing a three-track EP Couleé-D in 2017, the Chicago-based performer has released a stunning visual for their new single, “Crème Brûlèe.” The track, produced by Dan Foley, was actually conceived in 2013 and is the first full song Couleé ever wrote.
“With this track I really wanted to explore the persona of Shea Couleé,” the drag star said. “I wanted it to be sexy, fun, and reference the vibes of my favorite rap divas such as Lil’ Kim, Nicki Minaj and Azealia Banks. This song was my artistic statement. It was me wanting to say ‘I have arrived.’ And now, five years later, I finally feel comfortable saying ‘I have arrived.'”
