Shawn Mendes and producer Teddy Geiger have a storied history together. The two have worked together on multiple of Mendes’ hit songs, including “Stitches,” “Mercy,” and “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back,” and are currently working together on the singer’s third studio album.
Last year, Geiger announced to the world that she was transitioning and would be using she/her pronouns from that point forward. In an interview with Beats 1’s Zane Lowe, Mendes said that while Geiger’s transition took time to adjust to, he couldn’t be happier for her.
“I’m so grateful to be going through this process with her because I’m learning so much from it,” he said.
Mendes said that there are very few producers who understand him in the way Geiger does. “If that was any other person it was like my head’s exploding, I’m getting out of this room,” he said “The fact that she was able to take everything I was saying and just digest it all and make it all me, is genius. “
The singer also recalled the first moment that he referred to Geiger as “she” without having to consciously think about it. He said that the look on her face when he used the correct pronouns was profoundly moving.
“I wish everyone could experience this, because if they did, there would be no questions,” he said. “There would be no ‘I don’t get it,’ no confusion about the process.”
