When Sean Hayes sat down with Ellen DeGeneres on Wednesday (March 14) to talk about the new season of Will & Grace, the two longtime friends and gay icons quickly got into their gay legacies, spending equal time praising and fake-insulting one another.
After Hayes points out that Ellen has been on air for 15 years, he quickly one-ups his own observation and notes that his newly revived Will & Grace has been on for “much longer.” Ellen, being the modern queen of daytime talk, asks, “How long was it the first time around, before y’all got canceled?”
She goes on, reminding him that her own public coming out was a gateway for a show like Will & Grace to have wide public acceptance and eventual praise. “I had to come out first for y’all to do that sitcom,” she said of the show, which debuted in 1998.
Ellen’s quick wit leaves Hayes hunched over laughing, assuring, “It’s funny ’cause it’s true!”
