Since 2015, RuPaul’s Drag Race season 9 winner Sasha Velour has been creating visually-stunning and unique pieces of performance art with Nightgowns, her then-monthly drag revue in Brooklyn, NY. Now, the star is bringing her brand of extravagant, avant-garde performances to the world at large.
On Monday (July 29), Velour announced Nightgowns, an eight-episode docuseries set to premiere on the upcoming streaming service Quibi. The new series, described as “part performance documentary, part portrait,” will follow Velour as she adapts the monthly show into a fully-produced stage performance.
While Velour serves as both subject and executive producer for the series — with Academy Award-nominated organization The Documentary Group serving as producers — music video director extraordinaire Sophie Muller will take the reigns as the series’ director. Part of the show will focus on more straight-forward documentary-style scenes, with each episode culminating in an expertly choreographed lip sync number, optimized for the screen by Muller’s direction.
“Part behind-the-scenes documentary, part lip-sync spectacular,” Velour wrote in an Instagram announcement of the series. “I’m so excited for you to see the next stage of this very special drag show!”
Velour is not the first celebrity to prep a series on the new streaming platform; other big-name celebrities including Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Lopez, Scooter Braun, Chrissy Teigen, Tyra Banks, Lena Waithe and more have announced upcoming programs on Quibi as well. The streaming platform will officially launch on April 6, 2020.
