For Gay Pride Month, Billboard asked numerous pop culture luminaries to write ‘love letters’ to the LGBTQ community. Below, GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis shares hers. Read more Pride Month love letters here.
Pride is always a special and important time for me as a wife, mother, and a lesbian woman. One of my fondest memories was marching at my first Pride parade with GLAAD alongside my wife and two young children. Growing up and never seeing LGBTQ portrayals in the media meant that I didn’t always know what my life would look like – I didn’t see possible futures. And for me to be at Pride, celebrating with thousands of LGBTQ people next to my family was incredibly moving and is something I will remember all my life.
Now, with an administration that is systematically trying to erase LGBTQ people from the fabric of this country, Pride is more important than ever. It’s still a time to reflect and celebrate how far we have come, but this year we need to look at the battles on the horizon and resist together – because I want other LGBTQ people to have the chance that I did to proudly march alongside my family.
