While the world continues to self-isolate amid the coronavirus outbreak, people everywhere are looking for an uplifting message. So Sam Smith decided to do just that with a new video.
On Tuesday (March 24), Smith took to social media to perform a cover of Jackie DeShannon‘s classic song “What the World Needs Now Is Love.” Singing entirely a capella, Smith let their voice ring through, emphasizing the song’s iconic leading lyric, “What the world needs now/ Is love, sweet love.”
Alongside the video, Smith also posted a caption saying that it had been a minute since they’d actually sung, so they decided to remedy that. “Just woke up. Having a coffee and felt like singing,” they wrote. “I haven’t felt like singing for a few weeks now. Feels good. Have a beautiful day today everyone. The sun is out for you.”
The new clip comes days after Smith posted a video update to their social media, promising fans they would be posting more singing videos in the coming days in order to give fans something to sing along to while staying at home. “I think it would be really, really nice,” they said. “I think we all need it and, you know, in a time like this, music is a really, really beautiful thing.”
