In a candid new interview with The Good Place actress Jameela Jamil, singer Sam Smith revealed that he does not identify with any one gender, and rather considers himself genderqueer and non-binary.
Smith appeared on Jamil’s new Instagram interview series I Weigh, where he explained that he had looked into people who had spoken about identifying as non-binary and had a tough realization. “When I saw the nonbinary, genderqueer, and I read into it and I heard these people speaking, I was like, ‘F—, that is me,’” he said. “I’ve always had a bit of a wall between my mind and my body.”
When Jamil asked him to elaborate on his identity, Smith said that he simply does not identify as one thing. “You are a mixture of all different things, you are your own special creation,” he said of his gender. “That’s how I take it; I’m not male or female, I think I flow somewhere in between. It’s all on the spectrum.”
The new interview comes a few years after Smith made similar, but less open remarks about his gender in a 2017 interview with The Sunday Times. Speaking of his gender, Smith told the news organization then that he is very in touch with his feminine side. “I feel just as much woman as I am man,” he said.
Smith also said in his interview with Jamil that his relationship with gender was always tied to his issues with his body, which he says he’s working to overcome. “I’ve always been very free in terms of thinking about sexuality, so I’ve just tried to change that into my thoughts on gender as well,” he said. “I have very feminine body. When I move, when I have sex with men, it’s very feminine.”
