Emerging R&B singer Sakima has had enough of meaningless, digitally filtered connections that amount to nothing at the end of the day.
He sounds positively furious on his latest single “Apps,” out Tuesday (Oct. 30). It’s the most menacing, most primal thing we’ve heard by far from Sakima, who built his name on candid, truthful displays of gay sex and identity.
Smothered in dangerous, ear-rattling bass, Sakima goes on a rampage against men who swap partners every day of the week without any consideration of their partners’ feelings. “If I’m the only bitch on your map, you gotta delete all those other apps,” he snaps.
LA songwriter and producer Robokid joins in on the rampage, gleefully rallying against men who are “glued to your phone looking to get your d-ck sucked.”
“I made this song as a retort to the dating/hook-up culture that seems almost impossible to get away from if you’re ‘in the game,’ as it were,” explained Sakima in an interview with Highsnobiety. “I was dating someone in particular and it was going really well but by the end of it, it transpired that even though this guy really liked me he just wasn’t ready to give one person his attention.”
“I sort of found this inner voice in me that was much stronger and self-knowing than before all this dating apps shit that’s ruining potentially meaningful relationships,” he continues. “I seriously now think you should only be using a dating app if you’re struggling to meet new people in real life, and not as a file-a-fax to pick up guys, get them to like you and then drop them to try something new.”
“Apps,” along with last month’s “Holy Water,” are the first taste of Sakima’s upcoming debut album Project Peach, which is set for a 2019 release.
