Antoni Porowski made a splash this year in the acclaimed Netflix reboot of Queer Eye. As the show’s new “food & wine expert,” the star has managed to win the hearts of many the world over thanks to his earnest demeanor on the show — even if some of them don’t think that he knows how to cook.
In an excerpt from his upcoming cover story with Gay Times magazine, Porowski revealed that his relationship with Queer Eye goes beyond just food; it can actually be found in the show’s title. “When I first started telling people about the show, I would embarrassingly catch myself whispering ‘Queer,’” he said. “I don’t know if I was embarrassed or I had some kind of shame, but it still felt taboo from childhood.”
But in getting to be on the show, Porowski said that he was able to break down his own perceptions and stereotypes. “It’s kind of nice because now I say it really confidently. The more you immerse yourself in something, the less precious it gets,” he said.
The Queer Eye star went on to say that he identifies as sexually fluid rather than simply gay or even bisexual. “I’ve always considered myself a little more fluid along the spectrum,” he said. “So even being called bisexual…I remember in my early twenties I was like, ‘But bisexual means I can only like girls and guys, what if I like something else?’. Maybe it’s just my rebellious nature. I’m me, I’m Antoni, and I’m all these things.”
Porowski said that while he recognizes the importance of labels for some of those who are coming out, he chooses to ascribe himself to one. “Some people want to define themselves, and they should as it’s part of their identity. For me personally, I’ve never really had a label for myself,” he said. “Today I’m gay, I’m in a gay relationship, and that’s where I am. That’s good enough for me.”
Antoni’s full interview will be featured in Gay Times’ upcoming May issue.
