Actor Corey Camperchioli is owning his femininity. Not only did the NYC-based talent write and star in the short film Femme (now streaming on Revry), but the show was picked up for a series adaptation. Both the short film and the series are executive produced by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan — who won an Emmy for her role last week.
“I’m so happy for her. Honestly, there’s no one more deserving that I know of, and we’re just so thrilled and honored to have her as part of the Femme team,” Camperchioli tells Billboard. The two became friends while attending Tisch School Of The Arts.
Set in Hell’s Kitchen, Femme centers on Carson (Camperchioli) as he looks for love on dating apps. After being rejected by an online hookup for being too “femme,” Carson embarks on a hilarious journey of self-discovery confronts his ideas of gender. The film’s cast includes RuPaul’s Drag Race star Aja and Pose actor Johnny Sibilly.
To celebrate the film’s debut on Revry, Camperchioli opened up to Billboard about his first celebrity crush, his most over-used emoji and more.
First celebrity crush: I’d say Hugh Jackman. I saw him do The Boy From Oz on Broadway, and I remember being so infatuated with him as a talent and the fact that he was portraying someone queer. It was so special to be able to see him do that performance in front of my family as well, because they love the musical.
Desert island album: Oh, wow. Um, I think anything by Bob Dylan.
Album I associate with coming out: There is a pop opera, Bare, and it was the first musical that I ever listened to that touched on queer issues. I remember listening to it in the car, and saying “I’m gay” out loud for the first time after listening to the album.
Biggest guilty pleasure: Peach rings and The Real Housewives.
Spirit animal: A gazelle. They’re graceful and powerful.
First album I bought: Brandy. So it wasn’t the first album I bought, but it was the first album I received, and I got it for Easter and I was so that I started hysterically crying. [laughs] And that’s when my parents knew I was gay.
Who would make me the most starstruck: I’d say Mark Rylance. He’s one of those people that I’d drop everything to go see.
What color is my aura: Oooh. Oh, opal. It’s a beautiful mix of different colors.
Most overused emoji: The double heart. I am femme, I love love and I’m obsessed with the color pink.
