As shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race reach higher levels of mainstream success, drag stars are finding their way into more universally-accepted mediums. Drag stars Willam and Shangela appeared in the smash-hit film A Star is Born earlier this year, Ginger Minj is set to appear in the upcoming Netflix film Dumplin’, and even shows like Saturday Night Live have made entire sketches based around the art of drag.
That trend continued this weekend when SNL aired a new sketch featuring Drag Race alumni Jiggly Caliente and Peppermint. Titled “GP Yass,” the sketch follows a couple (host Steve Carell and castmember Heidi Gardner) on a road trip, bored with their monotone GPS voice. When they switch the mode of their device to “Drag Entertainer,” the screen changes to a glitter-filled extravaganza as the drag stars become the new narrators of their trip.
While Kenan Thompson provides many of the voice commands for the GPS, Peppermint and Jiggly appear on screen to offer the couple warnings of upcoming hazards, like school zones and disaster areas. “It’s a damn mess,” Jiggly remarks.
The skit ends with the two queens backup dancing for a dragged-out Cecily Strong as they sing a new theme song for the queer navigating system, appropriately called the GP Yass. “GP Yass — sold in any town where there’s still a circuit city,” the voiceover says as the fake commercial ends.
Peppermint and Jiggly have also been making waves as two of the latest stars of Billboard Pride’s new season of Spillin’ the Tea, along with Drag Race alums Bob the Drag Queen, Gia Gunn and Aja. New episodes of Spillin’ the Tea are available every Thursday on Billboard.
