While making her guest appearance on the season premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race, pop superstar Miley Cyrus stopped by RuPaul’s own podcast, RuPaul: What’s the Tee with Michelle Visage. During the interview, the singer revealed to the two hosts that her first kiss was with a girl.
“When I was kind of growing up, being from the South…my first kiss was with a girl in middle school,” Cyrus said. “And no one could understand, in Nashville, saying that…so I had that relationship.”
The comment came as Cyrus was discussing the importance of using her platform to spread a message of inclusivity. She commented that even back in her days as a Disney star, she still felt that responsibility. “I was one of the only kids on Disney that would come out and say that I supported all my gay friends,” she said. “No one really would say that, so that was always really important to me.”
During her first-ever appearance on Drag Race, Cyrus not only served as a guest judge, but dressed as a crew member to go undercover and spy on the queens in the Werk Room. Along with providing her expertise on the judges’ panel, Cyrus also served as a musical inspiration for the episode; the bottom two queens lip-synced to her classic Hannah Montana jam “The Best of Both Worlds.”
On the podcast, Cyrus also talked about how gender identity and sexuality were conduits for true self-expression. “Besides even sexuality, it’s about what your show represents; being your fucking self,” she said. “That’s what it is. It doesn’t have to attach to who you love, it’s about you loving yourself more than who you love outside yourself.”
