La Roux has taken Fox Business to task for using the song “Bulletproof” in a back-to-school segment promoting bulletproof school gear.
A broadcast of Mornings With Maria on Monday showed a segment on back-to-school gear lined with hard ballistic plates. The segment used a clip of La Roux’s 2009 single “Bulletproof” as the lead-in track, keeping only the song’s hook (“This time, baby, I’ll be bulletproof”) intact.
“It doesn’t even feel like it’s heavier than a regular backpack,” host Maria Bartiromo noted of the backpack, which is manufactured by MC Armor and costs $219. The company’s marketing manager, Carolina Ballesteros Casas, also highlighted some “fashion-forward” items, a puffer jacket and a protective tank top, the latter of which costs $1,500.
“Using ‘Bulletproof,’ a song I wrote about relationships, for a piece like this is abhorrent,” La Roux’s Elly Jackson said in a statement to Billboard. “I have never, and would never approve my music to be used in this way.”
La Roux’s last album, Trouble in Paradise, was released in 2014.
