It’s easy to find yourself stuck in a rut, doing all of the same things over and over again until you find yourself disinterested. L Devine knows the feeling, and she wants to break out of it.
On Friday (Jan. 24), the British pop singer-songwriter, born Olivia Devine, released her latest single “Boring People,” an ode to the monotony of everyday life. Fusing Devine’s dark-pop sound with some fuzzy grunge guitars, “Boring People” sees the singer establishes the less-interesting parts of her day, only to make clear she’s fed up with her own routine. “I got my s–t together, I read the news,” she sings. “But I’m faking, no clue/ Talking the same s–t as always.”
The accompanying video for the track sees Devine going through the motions of a typical pop star; she does yoga, she attends a house party and participates in a casual photo shoot, all appearing on the outside to be beautiful, blissful moments. But as the camera pulls back, each time, it’s revealed how bored she truly is with everything; her photo-shoot is low budget, her party is completely stopped in time, and she’s not even really doing her yoga — it’s just another posed moment.
“At the time [of writing “Boring People”], I felt I had almost fallen into a bit of a routine with my writing which made me feel quite creatively frustrated,” Devine said in a statement released with the track. “The chorus is a satirical take on the mundane parts of everyday life, while the verses get really introspective and self-deprecating. It’s basically a song about me getting bored of myself and all my bulls–t. I think the sound of the song itself perfectly mimics the feeling in the lyrics.”
