Double entendres in lyrics to popular songs are about as common as the sun coming up each day. But when Kylie Minogue released her newest single “Dancing,” a glittery pop song ostensibly about having a fun night out, few people saw the dual meaning in the words she was singing.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Minogue confirmed that the song is, in fact, about death if you listen closely. Some of the song’s lyrics, especially the chorus’ “When I go out, I wanna go out dancing,” can be interpreted as Minogue saying that she wants to literally go out of this life dancing.
“I think that’s clever writing,” she told EW. “It’s just a fact of life, isn’t it? It’s about how we deal with the life we have.”
The singer subtly hinted at this fact in the song’s music video, where she dances around a club with backup dancers wearing Day of the Dead-inspired makeup and costumes. Minogue described the video as “Dolly Parton meets Day of the Dead.”
“Dancing” is the lead single off of Minogue’s forthcoming album, Golden, out April 6.
