Despite the fact that she’s still new to the game, Mikeala Straus — better known by her stage name King Princess — has been impressing those in the music industry with her critically successful debut EP Make My Bed. The new queer artist even garnered the attention of pop megastar Harry Styles, who tweeted out some of the lyrics to her song “1950” back in March.
Now, Straus is continuing on her journey toward pop stardom with her new video for “Holy,” one of five songs released on her EP last month. In a similar vein to Ariana Grande’s “God Is a Woman,” the video sees the young singer-songwriter striking up various religious poses, demanding that her lover respect her as though she were divine.
“Honey, on your knees when you look at me/ I’m dressed like a fucking queen and you’re begging, ‘please,’” she sings while slowly diving into a swimming pool. “I rule with the velvet tongue/ And my dress undone/ And I’ll get you lost but I’m having fun.”
Straus saw major success with her debut single “1950,” which has already earned more than 100 million streams on Spotify since its release earlier this year. The song revolves around unrequited queer love, something the singer told Billboard was very important for her to convey. “I get asked, ‘Is it a choice to gender the music or put pronouns in?’ and for me it just wasn’t a choice,” she said. “It was just like, ‘If straight people can do it, why the fuck can’t I? I’ve been listening to this straight-people music for so many fucking years. Why can’t it be gay?’”
