For rising pop virtuoso King Princess, genre is merely a suggestion. The star has dabbled in everything from bedroom pop to electronic dance bangers. But now, King Princess is slowing things down and giving her fans a taste of something new.
On Tuesday (Sept. 3), King Princess (known offstage as Mikaela Straus) unveiled her latest single “Ain’t Together,” a slowed-down, chilled-out ode to label-less relationships. With dreamy, ’70s-rock guitars and a gloriously infectious drumline from none other than Father John Misty, Straus wonders aloud if an undefined relationship can last. “We say ‘I love you’ but we ain’t together/ Do you think labels make it taste much better?” she sings.
In an interview with Billboard earlier this year, Straus spoke about getting to work with Josh Tillman (Father John Misty’s real name) on her new song. “He came in and laid down some super psycho, amazing Beatles drums,” she told us. “I was like, ‘Give me Ringo, honey!’”
The new song comes off of the singer’s forthcoming album Cheap Queen, which is set to officially drop sometime this October.
